Track replay on a map
Managers replay any vehicle's route on an OpenStreetMap-based map, coloured by speed, with a slider to scrub through the trip.
Works offline
GPS points are saved on the phone and sent in batches when signal returns. Failed work orders and issue reports wait in a queue instead of being lost.
Work orders and issue reports
Drivers create work orders and report issues with photos, video and scanned documents straight from the phone.
The problem
A fleet management client needed an app that works where vehicles actually go: on the road, often with weak or no signal. Fleet managers needed to replay where a vehicle had been and how fast it was moving, read fuel, voltage and speed reports, and keep vehicles, drivers and trailers organised in one place. Drivers needed to log GPS from their phone, file work orders and report issues with photos or documents, without losing data when coverage dropped. The client already had its own backend and its own developers, so the app had to fit into an existing platform rather than replace it.
The solution
We built the app in Flutter for Android, iOS and the web, together with the client's team. Managers get a map view that replays a vehicle's track, with the route coloured by speed and a playback slider to move through the trip, plus reports for track, speed, fuel, voltage and location. Drivers can log live GPS from the phone, including in the background, and an overspeed alert sounds when a set limit is passed. Offline support was a core requirement: GPS points are stored on the device and uploaded in batches once the connection returns, and work orders or issue reports that fail to upload are queued and retried. The mobile version is available on Android, and the app was built with localization support.
Milestones
- Integration with the client's existing backend and login
- Map, track replay and reporting screens
- Background GPS logging and offline sync
- Work orders, issue reports and bulk import
- Ongoing releases with the client's team
Stack
- Flutter and Dart (Android, iOS and web from one codebase)
- Provider for state management
- drift on SQLite for on-device storage and offline queues
- dio for networking against the client's own backend
- Secure single sign-on plus social sign-in
- flutter_map with OpenStreetMap tiles
- geolocator with a background service for GPS logging
- Syncfusion charts for reports
Timeline
In active development since April 2024, with releases continuing into late 2025. Work was done together with the client's own developers, in regular iterations on top of the client's existing backend.
Outcomes
- Managers can replay a vehicle's route on a map and see where it slowed down or sped up.
- Track, speed, fuel, voltage and location reports sit in the same app as the map.
- GPS data and field submissions survive dead zones and sync once the phone is back online.
- Drivers report issues with photo, video and document evidence instead of calls or chat messages.
- Vehicles, drivers and trailers are organised in clear trees, with bulk import for larger fleets.
- One Flutter codebase serves Android, iOS and the web, with localization support.
- The mobile app is available on Android.
Capabilities
- Vehicle track replay with speed-coloured routes and a playback slider
- Track, speed, fuel, voltage and location reports with charts
- Live and background GPS logging from the phone
- Overspeed alert
- Offline storage with batched upload on reconnect
- Work orders and issue reports with photo, video and document scan
- Vehicle, driver and trailer management with bulk import
- Sign-up with OTP verification
- Localization support

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you build a fleet management app with GPS tracking?
Yes. We worked with a fleet management client's team on an app that logs GPS from phones, replays vehicle tracks on a map with the route coloured by speed, and produces reports for track, speed, fuel, voltage and location.
Does the app work without a mobile signal?
Yes. The app stores GPS points on the phone and uploads them in batches when the signal returns. Work orders and issue reports that fail to upload are queued and sent later.
Can you build on top of our existing backend?
Yes. This app was built on the client's own backend, so the mobile and web apps were made to fit the systems the team already ran.
What technology do you use for apps like this?
We use Flutter, so one codebase covers Android, iOS and the web. Maps use OpenStreetMap, and the app was built with localization support.
